What actually makes a towel good
Three things decide it: what the yarn is, how much of it there is, and how big the finished towel is. Everything else is packaging.
Choose for the job
Cotton is the familiar choice for bath and beach towels. Microfiber is lighter and quicker to dry for hair towels, washcloths and robes.
Size changes everything
A hand towel is 12 inches, a bath towel about 27 by 54, and a bath sheet 40 by 65. The bath sheet is the one that actually goes around you.

Choosing towels that last
At Towel Company Singapore we sell bath towels, bath sheets, robes and the accessories that go with them. This page is the short version of what we have learned selling them: what the numbers on a label mean, which size does which job, and what actually shortens a towel's life.

Cotton or microfiber
Cotton, and especially long-fibre Turkish cotton, gets softer with washing and holds a lot of water. It is what you want on a bath towel and a bath sheet.
Microfiber takes water off faster with less rubbing and dries in a fraction of the time. That is why the hair turbans and the washcloth packs are microfiber rather than cotton: a hair towel that stays damp is the one that starts to smell, and a washcloth used six times a day has to dry between uses.
Sizes, in the order people get them wrong
A washcloth is about 12 by 12 inches. A hand towel is roughly 16 by 28. A bath towel is around 27 by 54, and a bath sheet is 40 by 65 or larger.
The one worth knowing is the last. A bath sheet is not a large bath towel: it is the size that actually goes around an adult and stays there. It also needs a rail to itself, which is the part nobody mentions until it is hanging folded in four and taking three days to dry.
Buy the set, not the towel
Four matching bath towels bought together age at the same rate, fade at the same rate and fold to the same size. One new towel added to five old ones makes the other five look tired, which is the real reason bathrooms end up looking mismatched.
What shortens a towel's life
Fabric softener, first and worst. It leaves a film on the loops, and a coated loop cannot take up water. A towel that has gone waxy and stopped absorbing has almost always been softened rather than worn out.
After that: too much heat, and not enough air. Tumble on low, give a dense towel room in the drum, and hang it somewhere it can actually dry. Wash new cotton towels once before use to open the fibres up, and expect a little lint in the first few washes.
